Outside the Box
This activity helps students to summarize the main ideas and details of informational texts. This project is to be done after reading a text to help critical thinking and to think more objectively about future reading. For this activity, you will need a cube template, and have students create sides about the main ideas, characters and details in an informational text. For more information, click on the link below:

Informational Text Flipbook
This activity will help students students identify aspects of informational texts and structures, why we read nonfiction and comparing nonfiction to fiction. After reading an informational text, have students fill out cause and effect, problem and solution, questions and answers, description, and sequence. "What's the Gist?"
This particular activity is to be completed with an informational text similar to an article. After the class finishes reading an article, they are to complete this worksheet about the main idea and supporting details. Being able to state the main idea helps the students comprehend what the article was about and being able to summarize it into a sentence lets us know that they understand the article. After the students have finished telling what they know about the article and why, they are to write 10 "gist" words that summarize the article. This worksheet can be given to the students after reading the article and can be completed individually, in pairs or as a class. For more information, click on the link below:

Facebook Summary
For this activity, students will have read an informational text on a famous person in history. After reading an informative text, they will create a "Facebook" page on that famous person's history, information, create statuses for them and create recent activity they have read about from the informational text. You may create blank templates of Facebook pages and have the students fill it out pretending to be that famous person. This helps students to apply the information learned form an informational text and put that information into practice by creating a Facebook page. Informational Text Graphic Organizer
This is a graphic organizer for informational text that helps the students discover the main idea of the text. Along with that they will create sentences out of that main idea. For this activity the students will be given this graphic organizer after reading the informational text. Have the students fill it out on their own or in partners and review it all with the class.
